Bigha is one of the most popular traditional land measurement units widely used in Northern and Eastern parts of India. Unlike modern metric units, the value of Bigha varies significantly from one state to another, which often creates confusion. For example, 1 Bigha in Uttar Pradesh is different from 1 Bigha in West Bengal.

State-Wise Bigha Variations (Regional Guide)

Below is a quick reference table showing how Bigha values and sizes differ across various Indian states:

  • Biswa: 1 Bigha typically contains 20 Biswa (widely used in UP, Punjab and Haryana).
  • Katha: Used primarily in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal (1 Bigha = 20 Katha).
  • Dhur: Smaller divisions of Katha (1 Katha = 20 Dhur).
